At last weekend’s Decatur Book Festival, I received a free poem. A booth manned by professionally trained, don’t-try-this-at-home poets offered their poem writing services – all you had to do was give them a topic.
I provided the following prompt: A man with many interests who can’t focus on any one thing. Here’s what was written for me:
The biggest man, whose dreams
were all about to come true,
had the biggest day.
At dawn, he woke and started 21 blogs,
five email accounts, took five new
jobs and made a note to get
ten new girlfriends.
Over lunch, ordered a shovel for his
garden, strings for a guitar to
teach himself, announced his
senate candidacy, and forgot
his blog passwords and girlfriends’
Over dinner he had to skip,
he sat and made a mental note to buy a planner,
and over bedtime television, fell asleep
to dreams of his next big day.
